2 Delta employees dead in tire explosion at Atlanta airport

Two Delta employees were killed Tuesday when a tire on a Boeing 757 exploded in a maintenance area at an airport in Atlanta.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while the tire was being removed from the aircraft at the Delta TechOps maintenance facility.

A third employee was seriously injured but their current condition is unknown.

None of the victims has been identified.

“The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility,” the airline said in a statement. “We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

The plane had been grounded since arriving from Las Vegas on Sunday night and was undergoing routine repairs, officials said.

In a statement, Delta said it was conducting an investigation to determine what led to the incident.

Hartsfield-Jackson officials told Atlanta’s Fox 5 that operations at the airport had not been impacted.
