Two men have been arrested and charged with gunning down a Long Island father in his backyard two years ago, authorities announced Tuesday.
Christopher Fernandez, 28, and Oliver Schor, 22, were both nabbed Tuesday, News 12 Long Island were reported.
The two men stand accused of killing Michael Hartmann on Nov. 2, 2022, at his home in Bohemia, according to police. They were formally charged with second-degree murder.
Hartmann was 49 years old when he stepped outside into his backyard that day. Two men entered the yard while carrying rifles and fatally shot Hartmann, according to investigators. His children were inside the home.
After a lengthy investigation, Fernandez, of Sound Beach, and Schor, of Miller Place, were identified as the suspects. Fernandez’s arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday in Central Islip, according to Patch. Schor’s arraignment was delayed, as he was cuffed in Lexington, S.C., about 650 miles southwest of the crime scene.
Police did not publicly speculate on a motive for the killing or describe any prior connection between Fernandez, Schor and Hartmann.
Tuesday’s arrests represented the second breakthrough in a Suffolk County murder case in as many weeks. Last week, three men were arrested in the June 2024 killing of a man in East Farmingdale.
In that case, Gustavo Hernandez, 38; Walter Ramirez-Jeronimo, 19, and Wilson Ramirez-Jeronimo, 18, were charged with killing 48-year-old Juan Carlos Diaz Geronimo by strangling him to death.
Similarly, authorities released few details in that case, including any potential connection between the various suspects and the victim.
Overall crime is down on Long Island this year, and Gov. Kathy Hochul praised local law enforcement earlier this month.
“We’ve partnered with local police agencies to successfully get guns off the streets and drive down overall crime on Long Island,” she said.
