10 people killed, 7 wounded in mass shooting at bar in Mexico

A mass shooting at a bar in central Mexico killed 10 people and wounded seven others on Saturday.

Four men walked into a bar in Queretaro armed with long guns, and opened fire indiscriminately, authorities said. Videos on social media showed patrons ducking under tables as bullets flew throughout the establishment.

The victims were identified only as seven men and three women, Reuters reported.

One suspect was arrested shortly afterward, according to local police. Investigators tracked the vehicle the shooters fled in, and found it abandoned and set on fire.

None of the victims or suspects were publicly identified. Police did not speculate on any potential motives for the seemingly random assault.

“There will be punishment for those responsible for this brutal act,” Queretaro state governor Mauricio Kuri wrote on social media.

Though Mexico has been wracked by violence for nearly two decades, Queretaro has generally been considered one of the safest cities and states in the nation. However in recent years, the central Mexican state has seen an increase in violent incidents.

According to government data, more than 400,000 people have been murdered in Mexico since 2006. Most of the killings have been connected to long-running drug wars between ruthless cartels.

Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has said she won’t declare “war” on the cartels and instead continue her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s plan of addressing the root causes of cartel violence through social policy.
