1 person killed, at least 5 wounded in shooting at Georgia’s Albany State University homecoming

One person was killed and at least five others wounded in a shooting at Albany State University in Georgia during the school’s homecoming Saturday night, police said.

The deceased victim was identified as 19-year-old De-Marion Tayshawn Daniels, local NBC affiliate WALB reported. Daniels was from Atlanta, about 150 miles north of Albany.

The wounded victims have not been publicly identified. No suspects were named or detained by Sunday afternoon.

“The safety and security of our ASU students, faculty and staff are the number one priority of this institution,” interim school president Lawrence Drake said in a statement. “Updates will be provided as information becomes available.”

Gunfire erupted just before 9 p.m. on the school’s east campus, according to WALB. Exactly what preceded the shooting remains unclear.

Albany State is a historically Black university with about 6,000 undergraduate students. The school’s football team beat Morehouse 52-6 in Saturday’s homecoming game, hours before the shooting.

It was the second straight weekend that a shooting marred homecoming at a southern university. Last Saturday, one person was killed and nine wounded in a similar incident at Tennessee State University in Nashville.

“Albany State University remains committed to providing resources for the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our campus community,” Drake said. “Counseling and other resources are available to students during this time. We are encouraging our students to make use of these resources as needed.”
